AUSSIES IN ACTION - DAY 5
Para Triathlon
- One of the most heart-breaking moments for Australia at the Tokyo Games was when Lauren Parker was mowed down in the final metres of the Women's PTWC Triathlon to be edged out by just one second by Kendell Gretsch. The 35-year-old had the ultimate redemption today, beating the American by over a minute to score Australia's seventh Gold medal at Paris 2024. (vision here)
Parker's attention now turns to Road Cycling where she will become Australia's first dual-sport Paralympian at the same Games since 1992. - Former badminton player and rower Anu Francis finished fourth on Paralympic debut in the Women's PTS2 classification.
- Sam Harding finished less than one minute off the Bronze medal to finish fifth in the Men's PTVI classification, guided by two-time Olympian Aaron Royle.
Para Swimming
- After setting a Paralympic Record in the inaugural heat of the Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay (34 points), Australia ended up second-fastest qualifier into the even final. (vision here)
They then made two changes to the team, swapping their female backstroker for Tim Hodge and bringing in Alexa Leary for the anchor freestyle leg and it proved a masterstroke with Leary storming from fourth to first and scoring another Aussie gold.
- Jake Michel set a new Oceania Record in the Men's SB14 100m Breaststroke Final but could not fend off his Canadian opponent in the final stages, finishing with Silver. (vision here)
- Paige Leonhardt fell agonisingly short of her second Paralympic medal, finishing fourth in the Women's SB14 100m Breaststroke, just 0.09s off the podium.
Para Athletics
- Michael Burian has added Paris Bronze to Tokyo Silver after finishing third in the Men's F64 Javelin Final.
- Madi de Rozario is safely through to the Women's T54 1500m final after leading from the front in her morning session heat. Telaya Blacksmith will also be in the medal hunt after qualifying for the final of the Women's T20 400m.
- Five-time Paralympic medallist Rheed McCracken was just 0.12s off the podium, finishing fourth in the Men's T34 100m Final.
Wheelchair Rugby
- After an agonising overtime loss to Japan in the semi-finals, the Steelers broke a three-quarter deadlock to win the Bronze Medal match. Six-time Paralympian Riley Batt and captain Chris Bond once again dominated as Australia downed defending Paralympic champions Great Britain 50-48. (vision here)
Boccia
- Dan Michel and Jamieson Leeson have both taken away Silver medals from their respective BC3 Singles Finals. (vision here) The pair now get to combine forces in the Team event which they will likely enter as favourites.
Para Table Tennis
- Qian Yang is into the Women's WS10 Para Table Tennis semis after a dominant performance overnight. Unfortunately she will not be joined by Melissa Tapper who overcame a 2-0 deficit to force a decider but could not overhaul her opponent from Chinese Taipei.
