LIVE AND EXCLUSIVE ON STAN EVENT
8 September, 2022 – Stan today announced it’s next Stan Event Pay-Per-View bout on Australian soil, SBW v Hunt – a heavyweight clash headlined by two of the biggest names in Australian sport, dual rugby international superstar Sonny Bill Williams who will take on MMA legend Mark Hunt at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena on Saturday November 5. SBW v Hunt will be available for Stan customers to purchase on Stan Event, a must-see dream contest between two legends no fan will want to miss.
Ahead of SBW v Hunt, the two Samoan fighters came face-to-face for the first time at a press conference in Sydney this morning. Joined by renowned sports commentator Andy Raymond, Sonny Bill Williams and Mark Hunt argued their case and expressed belief of victory come Saturday November 5. In their respective corners, Sonny Bill Williams was joined by Wallabies fly-half Quade Cooper and Mark Hunt was joined by his manager Zen Ginnen.
Sonny Bill Williams said: “I’m undefeated in the boxing ring. When we get in there, there’ll be no niceties. He’ll be looking to knock me out and I’ll be trying to do the same. It’s a mouthwatering contest and I’m excited for the challenge. I’ll be in there to win.”
Mark Hunt said: “I was sitting on my couch eating cheesecakes and pies when I got the call. This gives me the chance to get back to being healthy again, and Sonny is no slouch. If he wants my name then he’s got to earn it. I still love competing. Always have. I’m a fighter at heart. I’m always up for the challenge and I will give it 100%.”
Sporting superstar Sonny Bill Williams will enter the ring with an unbeaten professional record of 9-0 following a clinical first-round knockout against Barry Hall that stunned the boxing world in Turf War on March 23. In 2021, Williams retired from an illustrious playing career with 123 NRL matches, headlined by Premierships in 2004 and 2013. Williams matched this success in rugby union with 58 caps for the All Blacks, one of only 21 players ever to win two Rugby World Cups. For Williams, he will look to continue his trailblazing unbeaten run, facing an undisputed legend of global combat sports in what is his most dangerous fight to date.
Originally from Auckland, Mark Hunt has achieved unprecedented success in Australian and New Zealand combat sports. In an ongoing career that has spanned the globe, Mark Hunt has been in some of the UFC, Pride and K-1's most memorable battles. A former UFC heavyweight title contender, Hunt’s iconic bleached blonde hair earned him the moniker 'Super Samoan' with his legendary jaw and one-punch knockout power. Having shared the ring with some of the biggest names in the history of combat sport such as Brock Lesnar, Alistair Overeem, and Stipe Miocic, Hunt now sets his sights on the undefeated Williams, looking for another signature walk off knockout victory to add to his legacy.
In what will be a huge month of Pay-Per-View boxing, Stan Event has also secured the exclusive rights to the Interim World Title fight, Joe Joyce v Joseph Parker in Manchester on Sunday 25 September (AEST). The heavyweight collision between No.1 and No.2 in the WBO rankings, could potentially have world title implications if Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk happens for undisputed honours and the WBO is vacated in the aftermath. Joe Joyce, an Olympic silver medallist enters the ring with a 14-0 record and faces New Zealand-born and three-time gold medallist Joseph Parker (30-2).
